Cultivating a Global Love for the Earth: The Mission of #NatureForAll
"In the end, we will conserve only what we love; we will love only what we understand;
and we will understand only what we are taught."
This philosophy is the heart of #NatureForAll.
Led by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN),
#NatureForAll is not a single organization but a thriving global movement.
It serves as a dynamic space for groups and individuals worldwide to share successes,
collaborate, and combat the triple threat of climate change, biodiversity loss,
and plastic pollution by fostering a deep, enduring love for the natural world.
As society becomes more urbanized,
a critical disconnect has formed between people and the ecosystems that sustain them.
#NatureForAll bridges that gap, ensuring people from all walks of life can experience,
appreciate, and protect our planet.
#NatureForAll is a global movement to inspire, celebrate, and restore love of nature.
It is not an entity but a community of organizations and individuals inspired to work together to create positive change.
At its core is a simple idea: the more people experience and share their love of nature,
the more support and action there will be for its conservation.
Spearheaded by two Commissions of the International Union for Conservation of Nature,
#NatureForAll is made up of almost 600 partners from around the world.
#NatureForAll is led by committed core partners who provide financial and strategic support:
Parks Canada, Children & Nature Network, the Alana Institute, Sustainable Forestry Initiative-Project Learning Tree,
and IUCN’s World Commission on Protected Areas and the IUCN Commission on Education and Communication.
Pathways to Global Connection
The #NatureForAll initiative operates on the foundational belief that conservation cannot succeed through policy alone;
it requires a cultural shift. To achieve this, the movement focuses its collaborative efforts across several key thematic areas:
- Championing Urban Nature: There is a growing global consensus that open green and blue spaces in cities are critical.
- #NatureForAll advocates for integrating nature into urban planning to tackle challenges
- such as stormwater management and urban heat islands.
- Local efforts, such as mapping urban air quality with low-cost sensors or investigating greenhouse gas emissions
- in city-adjacent spaces like the Chau Tsai Wetland, embody this mission.
- By turning cities into living laboratories, residents can interact with nature daily.
- Empowering Youth and Education: Today’s youth navigate a world heavily mediated by screens.
- #NatureForAll promotes nature as a setting for fun, adventure, and scientific exploration.
- By facilitating outdoor experiential learning, the movement helps young people forge personal connections
- to the environment, laying the foundation for lifelong stewardship.
- It advocates for the stewardship of vital ecosystems.
- Maintaining rigorous, up-to-date data is essential for this process.
- Utilizing the most recent 2025 Ramsar wetland site statistics, for example,
- ensures that spatial mapping and ecological network analyses are accurate,
- enabling effective management of these critical nature-based solutions.
The Critical Importance of Connection
The significance of #NatureForAll is backed by extensive research,
most notably highlighted in their comprehensive Home to Us All report.
The evidence is clear: connecting with nature is not just a recreational luxury;
it is a fundamental requirement for human health and ecological survival.
Spending regular time in natural environments lowers anxiety, reduces depression, and improves physical well-being.
Social experiences in nature also foster a strong sense of community connectedness.
From an environmental standpoint, this connection is the strongest predictor of positive conservation behavior.
To support complex initiatives—such as transitioning to a circular economy, managing waste in island nations,
or protecting carbon sinks—we must first ensure that communities have a meaningful,
personal relationship with the environment.
Knowledge alone rarely drives action; it must be coupled with empathy and experience.
Forging Global Alliances: Connecting #NatureForAll with GEEP and NAAEE
While #NatureForAll excels at uniting global organizations, shaping broad conservation policies,
and inspiring public awareness, turning that inspiration into sustained change requires structured educational frameworks.
This is where synergy between #NatureForAll, the Global Environmental Education Partnership (GEEP),
and the North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE) emerges. backing,
while GEEP and NAAEE possess the pedagogical expertise to execute them.
They can transform the movement’s broad objectives into structured, engaging educational toolkits suitable for classrooms,
universities, and community centers.
- Localizing Global Action: With the GEEP Asia-Pacific Regional Center (APRC) in Taiwan,
- there is an opportunity to localize #NatureForAll’s global strategies.
- For example, creating a sustainable tourism framework that leverages the unique history
- and natural environment of coastal towns like Tamsui serves as a localized case study of the "Urban Nature" pillar in action.
- Scaling Success: Through NAAEE’s large, interconnected network of environmental educators
- and researchers across North America and beyond, localized successes can be scaled globally.
- A community science project using GIS technology in the ASEAN region can be quickly shared, adapted,
- and implemented by educators worldwide, creating a unified front of environmental literacy.
By merging the global conservation authority of #NatureForAll with the educational infrastructure of GEEP and NAAEE,
we create a seamless pipeline from global awareness to localized, educated action.
